Women of all ages take part in Northampton's Fly it Forward event

NORTHAMPTON, MA (WSHM) -

The Northampton Airport hosted its second annual Fly it Forward event on Saturday, which promotes aviation to women.

Officials said only six percent of all licensed pilots are female, which creates a lack of role models in the industry.

The goal for Saturday was for 100 women to take a free 15-20 minute tour in the air.

Organizers said the event attracted people from as far away as New York and Vermont.

"We've had a group that came from the Bronx. We've got some people that came from Vermont, so we've reached quite a few people," said Holly Lurgio, the airport's marketing manager. "Our oldest passenger was 84 today, and our youngest was 4, so we've reached quite an age range as well."

"Well, I'm afraid of heights but I hope that all goes well, and the view is probably going to be really awesome," said Shelbey Hall, a 12-year-old taking part in the event.

All of Saturday's plane rides were free.

The pilots all volunteered their time to help with the event.
