A Topeka couple has finally brought their four adopted children home from Ukraine after getting stuck in the capital city of Kiev, awaiting passports from the new government.

Don and Lisa Jenkins, who also have two grown sons, went to Ukraine in early February to finalize the adoptions of three teenage girls and a 9-year-old boy. But the process has been derailed first by violent protests, then by the installation of a new government.

They expected the adoption to take two weeks, but passport complications and the rioting kept the family stranded in a hotel in Kiev for more than a month.

Their passports finally arrived earlier this week, and they flew home Saturday.

The four children speak little English, but they are excited to be a part of a new family.

"We're very happy to have all of them home. We're happy to be in America. Happy to be around family, people who speak English, and it has been a great experience overall. All the turmoil over there left a lot to be desired but just glad to be home," Lisa Jenkins said.

The family says they are exhausted after spending more than 20 hours on a plane, but they say they will be at church Sunday morning.
