BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
A neighborhood is on edge after a man was gunned down in a Birmingham park. The shooting happened around 11 a.m. Sunday, while a church service was going on next door.
Birmingham police identified the victim as Timothy Austin, 23, from Birmingham.
"For it to take place in your own backyard it's kinda sad," said Derick Robinson, who lives a few doors down from the Harrison Park.
Robinson returned home from church to learn a man was killed in Harrison Park, a park his children play at regularly.
"Anybody could have got shot out here today," said Robinson.
Police found Austin dead in the park, lying on his back with multiple gunshot wounds to the head.
"We are currently speaking with witnesses. The investigators are thoroughly working the area right now," Lt. Sean Edwards with Birmingham Police said.
Robinson was shocked.
"While people were in church shouting, somebody was in the park shooting," said Robinson.
"It's just sad because my daughter is four years old. She loves coming out here to this park. My son, he's 12 years old. For the first time we let him walk to the park behind our house by himself so I told him his park walking days are over," Robinson added.
No arrests have been made, but police do have a description of the suspect. He is described as a black male, about 6 feet and 150 pounds. He was wearing black jogging pants with a white T-shirt. The suspect also had on a black skull cap with a ball on top.
Police say he walked out of the park, but later got into a 1990's model silver Chevy Malibu. The Malibu has a broken driver's side passenger window that was covered with tape.
