BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Police believe they have the vehicle and the driver in custody involved in a hit and run crash that left a man dead Sunday night.

The victim has been identified as Troy Jacobson, 45, of Baton Rouge.

Officials with the Baton Rouge Police Department say the hit and run happened near the base of the College Drive exit ramp on I-10 East around 10:15 p.m.

Police say the driver, now identified as Carl McKnight, borrowed his roommates car Sunday night. He told police that he was scared and didn't want to go to jail, so he drove off after he hit Jacobson with the vehicle.

According to the probable cause report, McKnight then called the owner of the vehicle, his roommate Eric Abrams, and told him what happened. Abrams then called his insurance company and reported that his vehicle was involved in a crash and needed to be repaired.

Abrams and McKnight then took the vehicle to Champs Collision on Siegen Lane. Employees noticed the damage on Abrams' vehicle was consistent with the injuries and accident that happened Sunday night. Employees called police and stalled the two men until police arrived.

Detectives impounded a Honda Accord at that was found at Champs Collision and arrested McKnight and Abrams. While police were putting the men into a police cruiser, McKnight turned to the cameras and said "I just want to say that I apologize and I am sincerely sorry. God bless."

At the time of the hit and run, a couple staying at a nearby hotel said they heard a loud noise and looked over to see a man in midair. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses added the vehicle involved quickly sped off.

The crash remains under investigation.
