LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
One person was injured after an 18-wheeler crashed into a church in Center Star.
It happened Monday afternoon at the First Baptist Church on Highway 72.
Authorities said the driver of the 18-wheeler was injured in the wreck. A medical helicopter responded to the scene and airlifted the driver to the hospital. The driver's condition is unknown at this time, but he was conscious when responders loaded him into the helicopter.
According to a representative from Block USA's Mid-South division, the truck is from their Florence branch. They said the truck was not carrying a load and was heading back to the yard when the wreck happened.
A portion of Highway 72 was down to one lane as emergency crews responded to the wreck. Authorities said an estimated 75 gallons of diesel fuel spilled inside the church. Hazardous materials crews arrived on scene to clean up the fuel spill.
Crews began examining the structural integrity of the building, working to secure it before attempting to extract the truck.
