Edmund Pettus Bridge designated as national historic landmark

SELMA, AL (WSFA) -

The Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma has been designated as a national historic landmark.

A national historic landmark plaque was unveiled at a ceremony on Monday. The National Park Service Director, Jonathan B. Jarvis, spoke at the ceremony.

The Edmund Pettus Bridge was designated as a national historic landmark on March 11, 2013. The bridge became famous after the "Bloody Sunday" attack against civil rights marchers, which led to the introduction and passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. That act is considered to be one of the most effective pieces of civil rights legislation ever passed by the U.S. Congress.

The Edmund Pettus Bridge is one of 2,540 national historic landmarks in the United States. The National Historic Landmark Program is administered by the National Park Service to document significant events and outstanding aspects of American history and culture.
