HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Police have released the identity of a woman found dead Monday at a south Huntsville home.

Authorities identified the victim as 34-year-old Colleen Penton. Police said Colleen's husband, Robin Penton, shot her. The family said Robin then attempted to shoot some animals inside the house before trying to overdose on pills.

The family said they last saw Robin on Sunday, when he planned on riding motorcycles with Colleen's sister. They said the couple showed no warning signs prior to the incident.

"I asked my granddaughter, Colleen's sister, 'Did he show any signs of anything Sunday when you were out motorcycling?' She said no," said Billie G. Oliver, the victim's grandmother.

The family said Robin called his brother Sunday night and left a message saying he killed Colleen. His brother did not get the message until Monday, and they believe he alerted Huntsville Police.

Huntsville police cordoned off an area in English Village Monday morning, next to Redstone Arsenal's Gate 3 when they responded to a man, Robin Penton, threatening suicide. After breaking through the front door, they found Robin and the body of his wife, Colleen.

The victim's family said police let them go inside the home after they finished collecting evidence late Monday night. They said they knew to expect a crime scene but not to find a ransacked house.

"It's not fair," said Colleen's cousin, Regina Nierenberg, recalling the last 24 hours. "Just like somebody else said, he's in the hospital and Colleen can't heal. She's gone."

Police confirmed Colleen died inside the South Huntsville home, but would not comment any further. They have not yet released a cause of death as the investigation continues.

Colleen Penton leaves behind two school-aged children. They're staying with family as everyone copes with what happened inside the home.

"Her daughter said, 'Why did he have to be so mean and kill my momma,'" said Nierenberg.

Huntsville Hospital was contacted Tuesday afternoon for an update on Robin Penton's condition; a spokesperson said they did not have a patient by that name.
