Parents love to snap pictures of their children, but it may be more beneficial than just capturing that special moment. Your camera could potentially help diagnose eye cancer in your child.

If you take a picture of your baby, pay attention to what color your baby's eyes reflect. Usually baby's eyes reflect red. If they reflect white or yellow, it could be a sign of a lethal tumor inside or around the eye. This is called the white flash test.

Dr. Ming Lu, an ophthalmologist in Tyler said, "When you look at picture, one (eye) will show red reflecting, the other will show white."

The reason this test works is our eyes can reflect red because it is reflecting the red color of the retina. If there is a tumor, then it can't reflect that color.

"The tumor itself is a white-yellowish mass. It blocks the retina," Dr. Lu adds.

Mary Steele noticed that when she took a picture of her then-one-year-old daughter Miah, the reflection just wasn't right. Eventually, the eye began to swell and her mother knew it was more than allergies; it was cancer.

"It kept getting bigger and bigger until a week later; it was, like, almost horrifying to see your baby look like that," Mary Steele said.

Miah endured twenty weeks of chemotherapy, followed by six months of radiation.

"They had to put her to sleep every day and I would have to be in there with her," Mary said.

They did the MRI and CT, after that said it was gone, and I was so happy."

Now Miah is back to running and playing, proving that a picture can be worth well more than a thousand words.
