HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A Madison County Commissioner called out the Huntsville City School Board over the handling of the district's re-zoning plan, resulting in a

Commissioner Bob Harrison said Superintendent Dr. Casey Wardynski refused to meet with him and other black leaders in the community to review the plan. Harrison said there is a lack of protocol and respect.

Harrison said the board and Dr. Wardynski not only refused to meet with him and other community leaders, but the board also misrepresented them in some of the information given to the Department of Justice. Harrison said he wants accountability.

"He's made the statements of the only person he's accountable to is the Board of Education, and I'm saying that's not true," said the commissioner, "especially when millions of dollars pass through this commission in support of school systems in Madison County, and in particular, each one of us gives thousands – hundreds of thousands – to area schools."

Harrison said he has asked the Madison County Commission to set up a meeting with Dr. Wardynski if the superintendent won't meet with commissioners individually. Wardynski was not present at the commission meeting.

Wednesday night, school board president David Blair responded to Harrison's comments in a statement, which reads in part:

Commissioner Harrison's comments calling the school board and superintendent 'liars and practicing deception' is completely inappropriate and untrue. Let me be very clear, this school board and superintendent are focused on doing what is best for our students and our community... Itseems to me that Mr. Harrison needs to concentrate on important issues in hisdistrict like keeping neighborhoods safe, working on economic development andquality housing.
