Fmr. Autauga Co. public servant Danny Chavers sentenced after guilty plea

Danny Chavers Danny Chavers
AUTAUGA CO., AL (WSFA) -

Former Autauga County Commissioner and Autaugaville Volunteer Fire Chief, Danny Chavers recieved a split sentence Wednesday. He previously agreed to a blind plea, ultimately putting the decision in the judge's hands.

Chavers will serve 6 months in the Autauga County Metro Jail along with 24 months of supervised probation and 320 hours of community service. He has also been sentenced to pay $188,143.46 to the Autaugaville Volunteer Fire Department, $49,000 to the Autauga County Commission and $3,531.58 to Autaugaville. He is to report May 23 at 1 p.m.

Chavers and his attorney, Chip Cleveland, volleyed with prosecutors from the Attorney General's office for more than an hour to hammer during the plea agreement. No one, however, was prepared for what those prosecutors would say when Chavers stood before a judge.

Prosecutor, Bill Lisenby told the judge that Chavers funneled nearly $300,000 from public tax dollars for his personal use.  Here's how the cost adds up for the 5 charges Chavers pleaded guilty to: $240,000 meant for the Autaugaville Volunteer Fire Department were spent at hotels, gas stations, Victoria's Secret and online gambling.

"Regarding the theft from the State of Alabama, Chavers falsified documentation in order to obtain a $4,800 grant, placed these grant funds in the VFD account, and continued to make personal purchases with this money,"Lisenby said. "Also, Chavers used his position as head of the Autaugaville Water Works to obtain two checks totaling $49,000 from the Autauga County Commission, which was supposed to go to the town of Autaugaville but which Chavers, instead, placed in the VFD fund and continued to use for personal purchases."

Cleveland said today was closure for Chavers, "He's come to the foot of the cross, and as we say in Autauga County, he manned up.  He's accepted responsibility for the benefit of his family".
