Brutal winter leaves salt supplies low in Maumee, Perrysburg

MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Plow trucks were very busy Wednesday evening along Illinois Avenue in Maumee. They were throwing down one more round of salt, since melted snow from earlier in the day will re-freeze.

While the main roads like Illinois and Conant were in good shape, the city had to be very conservative with salt on secondary roads.

Brian Tomko enjoyed the snow tonight, but earlier, had to drive through the heavy snowstorm.

"It was perfectly dry when I left but by the time I got to work, it was really looking bad. Getting slushy and ugly and that was only 30 minutes later. Coming back there were areas that were real good and then there were areas that were terrible," said Tomko.

Maumee started the day with only 300 tons of salt. Since they were careful about using it, they may have half of that left to get through the rest of winter.

In Perrysburg, they started the day with just 500 tons of salt. Crews only salted the main roads, and should have enough for whatever happens this month.

Salt rationing does have consequences, though. Residential streets might not be cleared yet.

"I had six men that I brought in at 4 this morning and I imagine many of them will work until midnight tonight trying to get back into the subdivisions, get them opened up so people can get back and forth," said Rick Toepfer with the Perrysubrg Public Service Department.

Perrysburg does not use snow emergencies, but city leaders are asking drivers to get their cars off the roads so the plows can finish their work.
