MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Montgomery Department of Public Safety says President Obama will recognize Police Chief Kevin Murphy at this year's St. Patrick's Day reception at the White House.

Chief Murphy is being recognized for his actions during the 2013 Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage to Alabama.

It was at this event where the Chief apologized to U.S. Representative John Lewis of Georgia, for MPD's failure to protect him and other Freedom Riders. The group was beaten in 1961 when they arrived at the Montgomery Greyhound Bus Station.

The visit to the White House was coordinated by Representative Lewis and will also be attended by Prime Minister Enda Kenny of Ireland.
