(WMC-TV) - Action News 5 is sending out a high five to the legendary group, The Bar-Kays. The musical group announced its plans to celebrate 50 years of being in the music business.

For fives decades, applause has always welcomed the Bar-Kays, and during a news conference at Stax Museum of American soul music group members said thanks to all their fans.

"You have been part of the this journey we call the Bar-Kays journey ... 1964 to 2014, this is the baddest (sic) band in the land," said band member Larry Dotson.

Over the years the Bar-Kays have become synonymous with great vocals and a funky beat. It is a style that has sold millions of records and turned group members into music icons, and it all began at Stax Records. The year was 1967, and the Bar-Kays began their career with the hit record "Soulfinger."

The record was playing during the news conference when the Bar-Kays announced they planned to celebrate the group's 50th anniversary with a huge gala December 4. In the weeks leading up to it, the group will host a series of concerts and other fundraiser and donate the proceeds to five local charities.

"It's a blessing to be able to live long enough to be able to give back. This is so rewarding to us," said band member James Alexander.

St. Jude, LeMoyne Owens College, and the other three charities have received help from the Bar-Kays every year. Members say that giving, just like their music, will go on and on and on.
