9-year-old continues recovery at B'ham hospital after being shot in Prattville

PRATTVILLE, AL (WSFA) -

A 9-year-old boy who suffered a gunshot wound to the chest continues to recover at a Birmingham hospital following what is believed to be an accidental shooting last week. Authorities say the child remains stable and say they've been told he is expected to make a full recovery.

Investigators say the shooting happened around 5 p.m. Thursday near downtown Prattville.

The shooting happened on Upper Kingston Road. "It happened at a friend's house and the child was close to going unconscious, and he was moaning a little," Thompson said.

He was rushed to the Prattville Baptist Hospital emergency room before being flown by medical helicopter to a Birmingham hospital Thursday evening.

The boy was shot once in the chest with a .22, narrowly missing any vital organs. The news is encouraging for the child.

"The Prattville fire medics and the staff in the ER did an excellent job. They got him stabilized,"  Thompson said.

Thompson says while the investigation is continuing, this appears to have been an accidental shooting. The chief declined to get into specifics. However, Thompson did say he does not believe any charges will be filed.

"I have a grandson the same age and it was tough seeing this little boy because I thought of him," Thompson.
