Civil Rights Movement icon to speak at Burritt Mansion

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Dr. Sonnie Hereford, III, the Huntsville Civil RightsMovement icon, will speak at Burritt on the Mountain on Sunday.

Dr. Hereford was a leading figure in the area's Civil RightsMovement and founded the Community Service Committee, helping to plan manyinnovative protests across the city.

In Sept. 1963, Dr. Hereford and his son joined three otherfamilies in integrating Huntsville City Schools, despite opposition fromGovernor Wallace.

Dr. Hereford will speak at 1:30 p.m. in the Burritt Mansionabout his experiences. He is featured in Burritt's current exhibit, "This isRocket City, U.S.A. Let Freedom Begin Here," which is opened until April 7.Regular admission charges apply.
