Bay High students turn trash into fashion to promote recycling

BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (WLOX) -

Bay St. Louis is gearing up to host a fashion show with a twist. It's the 4th annual No-Trash Bash Fashion Show. WLOX News spoke with the organizers and some of the models preparing to walk the runway.

Wearing leaves and paper may seem like a fashion faux pas to some, but the Bay High Steppers said they're letting artistic juices flow to promote recycling in the city. Sunday, the teen group spent the day creating unique, resourceful outfits for the No Trash Bash Fashion Show Fundraiser. Pricilla Austin is the group's dance coach.

"I was not really aware of all the recycled materials we use day-to-day. Once we became involved with the pageant, just seeing the different designs and the creative ideas and the materials people use for their outfits makes everyone aware," said Austin.

Event organizer and Bay St. Louis Beautification Administrator Katie Stewart couldn't agree more. She even showed off a few of the very trendy reused and recycled fashions from past competitions.

"We have had outfits that are made out of red plastic cups," said Stewart. "We have a wedding dress. It is made out of coffee filter papers, recycled Mardi Gras beads, the bouquet is made out of recycled red napkins, and the veil is made out of recycled Mardi Gras beads."

Stewart said the proceeds from the four-year-old show will go toward beautification efforts in the city and to encourage more people to think green.

"This year, our money raised will go to our Mississippi Edible Garden, which has started and is behind the Boys & Girls Club and it is open to the community. This year, we planted some fruit trees and 13 of them were stolen. All of our proceeds are going back to replace these 13 trees that were stolen and to raise more money to make the garden larger," Stewart said.

Organizers are hoping the recycled outfits will excite the community enough to raise $5,000 this year.

The fashion show will be held Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Bay St. Louis Community Center on Blaize Avenue. The tickets are $10, and the event is open to the public.
