WILMINTON, NC (WECT) - Wilmington City Council members approved an additional $800,000 to pay for storm debris pickup caused by recent winter storms.

Wilmington City Public Services Director Richard King said it will now require an additional $800,000 to pay an outside company to remove the debris. That brings the total debris pick-up cost to $1.4 million.

King said the crews are currently close to completing the first phase of pick-ups in the city.

Wilmington City Council members asked King about reimbursement coming from New Hanover County and state government.

"It's obviously going to help if we get reimbursed on the money," King said. "We're going to continue to get the material picked up and then we'll work with the state afterwards to see what reimbursement we can get."

King said New Hanover County officials don't want to discuss reimbursement until the state decides how much it will pay.

King said no money will come from the federal level.

Debris clean up should be cleared up by the first week of April. Crews started the final round of clean up this week.
