Bracketology: Pros, novices competing for $1 billion prize

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

It's that maddening time of the year when the non-sports fan has as much of a chance to win the office pool as the obsessed basketball fan.

And this year the bracketology has risen to a new level with an offer to pay $1 billion to anyone who can correctly pick the winners of every game, including the April 7 championship game.

610-AM sports host Danny Parkins said Thursday and Friday will be a virtual holiday at his radio station.

"The best thing about the bracket is just the randomness of it," he said. "The secretary who watches zero minutes of college basketball over the course of the year has just as good of a chance to win their office pool as I do, who watches 10 games a week."

Warren Buffet made the $1 billion offer through a bracket challenge offered through Quicken Loans and Yahoo Sports.

You have a better chance of winning a mega-million prize, getting a hole in one or being struck by lightning. The odds of willing are 1 in 9.2 quintillion.

A quintillion, by the way, is 1,000,000,000,000,000,000, or 1 followed by 18 zeros.

The chance of filling out your own bracket, and the upsets have produced fans when it comes time for March Madness,  fans who normally give basketball short shrift before Selection Sunday.
