Registering your storm shelter, keeping you safe

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - With winter coming to an end, severe weather season is right around the corner.

You may think your family is prepared if you have a storm shelter, but you may need to take another step to make sure your family is ready when disaster strikes.

Getting your storm shelter registered is that next step.

Rethink Storm Shelters owner Chrystal Bullock said "If there is major catastrophic damage then your shelter could be obstructed so that you could be trapped inside, and if you had your shelter registered than the local 911, they can contact you, be able to locate you immediately, just within minutes."

E-911 Director Jeff Presley said that E-911 uses a database to locate all of the registered shelters and that they have access to the database even if power is knocked out.

Presley said "It's as simple as going to the Jonesboro 911 web site, Jonesboro911.org, community relations, go down to your information registry to storm shelters, fill out some information, hit submit, it will be sent directly to the 911 center and be entered into the database that day that you submit it."

Presley said you can also register your shelter by calling his office at (870)-933-4694.
