FORT PAYNE, AL (WAFF) -

The City of Fort Payne has announced the name of its new fire chief.

Current Assistant Fire Chief Don Fischer will assume the role later this year. The appointment was announced at Tuesday night's city council meeting.

Fischer will take over the role from current Fire Chief Steve Cunningham, who previously announced his upcoming retirement. Cunningham has been fire chief since 2007.

A changeover date has not been announced.
