BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
The Birmingham Police Department blocked off several downtown streets while responding to a suicide threat on Wednesday morning.
Police were notified around 8:30 a.m. that a man had a gun inside of his car in a parking deck near 3rd Avenue North and 20th Street. Officers temporarily closed 20th Street North between 3rd and 5th Avenues to protect people nearby.
Police heard a single gunshot and confirmed the man did commit suicide. Authorities say he was terminated from his job yesterday. A co-worker called 9-1-1 when they saw his truck near the office.
"When we get a call of a person with a gun in downtown Birmingham we take all the necessary precautions. We set up a perimeter we don't have citizens that could be able to come in and access in and out. We want to make sure all the citizens are protected and safe until police are able to rectify the situation," Lt. Sean Edwards with BPD said.
Police are in the process of notifying the man's family.
