SURPRISE, AZ (CBS5/AP) -

A Cincinnati Reds pitcher hit in the face by a line drive at a spring training game underwent surgery for fractures Thursday night but is expected to pitch again this season, the team announced.

Surgeons inserted a titanium plate to stabilize the fracture site sustained by Reds closer Aroldis Chapman.

Chapman can begin working out and throwing in 10 to 14 days and could pitch in game conditions in four to six weeks, surgeons said.

The 2 1/2-hour surgery was performed at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in downtown Phoenix.

Chapman was taken off the field at Surprise Stadium on a cart Wednesday night after he was struck by Salvador Perez's drive with two outs in the sixth inning of the Reds' game against the Kansas City Royals.

The game was called with the Royals leading 6-3.

The pitcher had thrown a 99 mph pitch that Perez sent back at the pitcher. Chapman crumpled to the ground, face down and flailing his legs. Medical personnel, including Royals Dr. Vincent Key, rushed the field.

Chapman's father was at the game and also rushed to the mound from the stands.

Chapman never lost consciousness, according to a Reds beat reporter.

Several players knelt around the mound as Chapman was being attended to and the stadium became silent.

An ambulance's siren could be heard in the background while Chapman was loaded onto the stretcher and taken to Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center in Sun City.

Chapman, who throws a 100 mph fastball, had walked four Royals in the inning before being hit.

Reds announcers reported Perez "flinched" after seeing the liner hit Chapman in the forehead, according to Deadspin.com.

The Cincinnati pitcher remained moving throughout his on-field treatment.
