BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Dalai Lama will be coming to Birmingham in 2014, according to the mayor's office.

The announcement was made on Thursday that the Dalai Lama is schedule to come to Birmingham on October 24 and stay until October 27. During his visit, public and private events will take place and the weekend will take on a human rights theme. The Dalai Lama will also hold an address on October 26 at Regions Field.

"We are honored to have His Holiness the Dalai Lama visit our City. With our shared legacy of Human Rights, Birmingham continues to establish herself as the cradle of Human Rights for the United States. The peaceful protest model first established here has been used around the world to enact real and significant change. The Dalai Lama has mentioned Dr. King's ‘Letter from the Birmingham Jail' as a significant inspiration of his. This visit will continue the work of presenting Birmingham on a national and international stage as 50 years forward," said Mayor William Bell.

City officials are working out the logistics of the visit. More details are expected next month.
