MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

It's official, Montgomery's Questplex concept -- a combined children's museum and high-tech library -- has been abandoned. WSFA 12 News learned Thursday the bulk of the funding for the $22 million project had fallen through.

Friday the city of Montgomery and the Montgomery City-County Public Library system both said they are still committed to it becoming a reality, but they are now going their separate ways.

One Dexter Plaza, where Questplex was going to be, sits at the bottom of Montgomery's most historic street. The city and the library system are working to determine what happens now.

Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange says the lack of the children's museum, and the $4.5 million new facade on One Dexter Plaza won't have much effect on the efforts to revitalize the lower block.

"Lower Dexter Avenue now really has a life of its own," Strange said.

Mayor Strange says now it is time to re-think the plan.

"Anytime you have this opportunity to redefine something, let's focus on the redefinition and let's make that the library of the future," Strange said.

The Montgomery City-County Public Library system is still committed to creating the Library of the future.

"We think that it's more important that we provide for the city of Montgomery a quality library that serves the young and old," said Thomas McPherson, President of the Montgomery Library Board.

Now, it's looking at a smaller space on the first floor of the building instead of the third.

The children's museum is looking at other options all together but still planning to stay downtown.

"Downtown is growing so fast that it's hard to find a good place," said Bo Jinright, who sits on the Children's Museum board. "We've got a few tricks up our sleeve in the coming year or so to sort of revive our idea towards everybody."

The city of Montgomery is now keeping its focus on what it knows it can accomplish.

"While this is a left turn or a right turn in the road, it's an opportunity now to do something that we only are single focused, and we're single focused now on the library," Strange said.

The city owns the rights to the name "Questplex" but is open to discussing how it can be used if an organization is interested in it. The Questplex signage displayed on One Dexter Plaza will come down in the near future.

The Montgomery City-County Library system has created a committee to spend the next 30 to 90 days coming up with a plan for the new library of the future inside One Dexter Plaza.
