Five Metro police officers have been temporarily reassigned following a deadly shooting near Centennial Park Friday.

Metro police spokesman Don Aaron says the officers fired in self-defense when the suspect, Aaron Smith, 51, turned towards them with a handgun.

The shooting happened shortly after 6 p.m. outside a pizzeria on Elliston Place.

Moments before the deadly encounter, police say Smith was seen running through the strip mall with the firearm.

According to Aaron, Smith tried to open at least one business door.

"The police department did not want this man entering, based on what had just happened," Aaron said. "We did not want him entering businesses where innocent citizens were."

Police followed Smith to the Centennial Park area after he threatened a Smyrna detective and carjacked a woman at gunpoint.

Both of those incidents happened at about 5 p.m. on 8th Avenue South.

According to police, Detective Rick Hall stopped by America's Motor Sports while investigating the theft of a woman's purse and credit cards during a car burglary.

"The Smyrna detective happened to call America's Motor Sports today to follow up on the car burglary, and (while) talking to them he learned that this guy was in the store this morning and had talked about coming back later today," Aaron said.

Hall was threatened at gunpoint after he asked to speak with Smith outside the store.

"The police detective grabbed the individual by the jacket with one hand" Aaron said.  "The fellow came at the Smyrna detective with the other hand with a gun with a laser sight pointed directly at the Smyrna detective's forehead."

Hall let go and Smith ran down the street, where he carjacked a woman. Police were able to track the woman's SUV because her cell phone was left inside. Officers used a helicopter to follow the vehicle. Police say Smith drove erratically through several parts of Nashville before he reached the Centennial Park area.

Smith was shot shortly after he left the vehicle in a restaurant parking garage.

"We heard the sirens and ran to the window and we saw a whole bunch of cops running around," said one witness. "Then we heard about 6 to 10 gunshots."

At the time of the shooting, Smith was wanted on three outstanding warrants in Davidson and Williamson counties.

According to police, he had a lengthy criminal record including robbery, burglary and forgery convictions.

Police identified the five officers involved in the shooting as Josh Reece, Michael Gooch, Shawn Rosson, Clyde Stambaugh and Dustin Tidwell. All of them have been placed on routine administrative assignment.
