OURAY COUNTY, COLORADO (WBRC) -
Divers in Colorado have located the missing Gadsden plane that crashed in a reservoir on Saturday. Five people, including three children, are believed to have been on board. Searchers don't think anyone survived the crash.
The fuselage of the single-engine Socata was intact and the wings were attached, but the bodies of the pilot and passengers have not yet been recovered. Crews are using a remote-controlled rover to search for the victims and the rest of the plane in the reservoir, the AP reports.
The following people are believed to have been on the flight: the pilot, Jimmy Hill, and passengers Katrina Barksdale, her two young boys Kobe and Xander, and their cousin Seth McDuffie. Jimmy Hill and Katrina Barksdale were described as friends.
They were headed to Colorado for spring break when the plane crashed south of the Montrose Regional Airport in Colorado.
Preliminary information from the National Transportation Safety Board indicates Hill reported the plane was in a spin before it lost communication and crashed into the water.
On Sunday, Mitchell Elementary School in Gadsden was covered in flowers as the community mourned the loss of Katrina Barksdale and her sons Kobe and Xander. Chris Haney was a friend and coach to both of the boys.
"Full of life, regular, loving, seven and eight-year-old little boys," said Haney about the boys. "Very precious to this community, very close to us."
On Sunday, Westbrook Christian School in Rainbow City came together as well, trying to deal with this tragic loss of 8th grader Seth McDuffie.
"When you talk about Seth you smile because he's one of those guys that loved people, he loved making people laugh, so a really unique young man," Matt Kennedy said.
The plane's pilot, Jimmy Hill, was a prominent businessman who owned Gadsden Tool, which he and his father built over a number of years. He also owned Gadsden Aviation, located at the Northeast Alabama Regional Airport and the nearby Airport Cafe on Highway 77.
Hill was a longtime board member for the Gadsden-Etowah Industrial Development Authority and was in his second year as the board's president. IDA executive director Mike McCain said Hill's election was unanimous because the board members thought so much of him.
"In that volunteer capacity, he played a meaningful role in our efforts to create new jobs in the community, just as he did in his real role, as president of Gadsden Tool Company and as founder of many other companies in the community," McCain said.
Since Saturday, searchers had been trying to locate the plane. They found part of the plane, but the main part wasn't discovered until Sunday evening.
"I just hope we get closure as far as locating the bodies," said Haney.
Crews are still working to recover the bodies of the five people who were on board.
