MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The 26th Annual Alert Day will be hosted by the American Diabetes Association along with Baptist Health on Tuesday. "Take it. Share it. Step out." is the theme to this year's event.

The event is regarded as a one-day "wake-up call" asking the American public to take a test to find out if they are at risk of developing type-two diabetes. Nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes. Seven million of those with diabetes do not even know they have it. According to studies an additional 79 million American adults have prediabetes, which puts them at a high risk of developing type-two diabetes. Recent estimates show that as many as one in three American adults will develop diabetes in 2050 unless steps are taken to stop diabetes.

The primary risk factors for type-two diabetes are being overweight, sedentary, being over the age of 45 and having a family history of diabetes. Studies have shown that type-two diabetes can be prevented, or delayed, by losing just seven percent of body weight through regular physical activity and healthy eating.

The Risk Test is available at diabetes.org/risktest or by calling 1-800-342-2383.
