18-year-old dies in accidental shooting

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

William Blackwell, 18, of Nashville, passed away Sunday after he was shot by a friend last week. No charges have been filed against 18-year-old Robert Goodner, the best friend police said was holding the gun when it went off.

"My nephew, he wouldn't have dreamed in a million years that he would've been leaving the world like this," said Blackwell's aunt, Clemmie Greenlee. "He just wouldn't have."

Greenlee said she's desperate to reach out to young people through her Nashville Peace Makers program, having seen far too much tragedy at the hands of gun violence.

Ten years ago, her son's life was taken in a shooting, and now, she's lost her nephew.

A Hunters Lane senior, Blackwell's family said they firmly believe the shooting was just an accident.

"Doesn't matter what the police says to me, all I need to do right now is find Mr. Goodner and love up on him and his family because they're just as terrified as we are," said Greenlee.

Monday, a crowd with the Partners in Struggle organization took to the streets carrying signs reading "Stop the Violence." By holding a Gun Violence Week, they hope the message will save young lives.

"We want others in the community to step up," said Earl Jordan of Partners in Struggle. "This isn't something we should be tolerating. Every week, every day, another youth's life is being taken by another youth."

Embracing friends and family, Greenlee said she just wants her nephew remembered as a good-natured young man who loved working with computers. She said she's so proud both his kidneys and liver have been donated so his giving spirit will live on.

"Someone got a phone call on my nephew this weekend and three families are jumping up and down for joy right now," said Greenlee. "They're getting ready to be saved by him, and that's what he would want."
