HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville Fire & Rescue commenced a new class of firefighters on Monday.

The class consists of 24 recruits for Huntsville Fire and two for the Huntsville International Airport, and these cadets are expected to graduate in late August.

Cadets will be taught a variety of skills, including the latest rescue and firefighting techniques and about hazardous materials, and they will be nationally registered EMTs.

"After a lengthy hiring process, the entire department is very excited about bringing these new firefighters on board to replace retiring firefighters that have given years of service," said Fire Chief Howard McFarlen. The fire chief is confident that the academy staff will do their best in guaranteeing that the new firefighters are well trained and fully prepared to continue Huntsville Fire & Rescue's great service to the city's citizens.
