LAKE MARTIN, AL (WSFA) -

Two families are safe after a young girl was credited with alerting them to a house fire, says Paces Point Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jeff Henderson.

Chief Henderson says the fire started in a home on Holiday Drive, located in the Paces Point Community on Lake Martin. The fire is believed to have originated in the basement before spreading to an adjacent property next door. The two houses are connected by a walkway.

A young girl in the first residence awoke to the smoke, according to Henderson, and attempted to exit through her bedroom door. When she opened the door, the smoke was too thick to pass.

Henderson says the girl climbed out of her bedroom window and went upstairs to alert her parents. She also went next door and alerted the neighbors.

"If it wasn't for this young girl, this situation would be much different," Henderson added.

The cause of the fire is not known at this time as the investigation continues.

Both homes are considered total losses.

Union, Stillwaters, Dadeville and Camphill fire departments assisted.
