HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Crews on Redstone Arsenal unloaded a new type of fuel tank Thursday that could define the future of NASA.

The tank is called a composite cryogenic fuel tank. NASA scientists have said this is possibly game changing technology. Right now, metal fuel tanks are used but this composite tank would be lighter and more cost efficient.

The tank landed at Redstone Arsenal by way of NASA's Super Guppy aircraft which hasn't landed in the rocket city since 2007.

Tests will be done on the fuel tank at Marshall Space Flight Center. A smaller composite tank was tested last year.

According to scientists, the new tank will be 30 percent lighter and will provide a 25 percent cost savings. The fuel tank ties into a new heavy lift rocket meant for deep space travel.
