Mississippi Co. Quorum Court passes nuisance property ordinance

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - The Mississippi County Quorum Court passed an ordinance regarding unsightly properties.

Mississippi County Judge Randy Carney said the ordinance was passed in response to complaints from county residents who live near abandoned or neglected properties.

Violators can face fines of up to $100 per day for not adhering to the ordinance.

"It creates a hazard and unsanitary living conditions for their neighbors. It's a haven for rodents and snakes and rats," said Judge Carney.

Quorum Court Justice Barry Ball said until now there was no county ordinance on record to address blighted property.

"We actually had absolutely no recourse. We didn't have anywhere we could go with it so the judge actually found this ordinance from Crittenden County and we took it and revised it somewhat."

A resident who lives on the west end of the county who did not want to be identified said in addition to junk cars and thick brush, she has seen dead animals on the vacated property next door to her home.

In a neighborhood on the east end, a resident described what they called "the jungle" next door, where trees are growing through the roof of a house that has been vacant he said for at least 10 years.

The ordinance gives the county the authority to condemn properties.  Property owners will have up 30 days to comply with the ordinance after receiving a notice.
