SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

What started as a normal school day for a 14-year-old student at the Van Sickle Middle School in Springfield turned into a nightmare after her mother says she was reportedly beaten by a male student while in school.

The incident happened on Wednesday.

The girl's mother posted a photo of her daughter's injuries on Facebook asking for answers from school officials.

She said her daughter was brought to Baystate Medical Center with a laceration and bruises to her face.

Azell Cavaan, spokeswoman for the Springfield Public Schools, told CBS 3 because of the ages of the students involved, she could not speak about the specifics of the case, but she said both the school and police department are investigating.

"That could include a number of things. From interviews with students and teachers to viewing footage to see if any cameras in the vicinity caught anything on tape," said Cavaan.

Once the girl was examined by the school nurse, the decision was made her injuries needed to be treated at a hospital.

Cavaan said that is protocol any time a student is injured while at school.

"The school nurse will talk with the parents to see if they want to pick their kids up or have an ambulance take them to the hospital, which is what happened in this case," explained Cavaan.

Parent Tommy Mitchell said he received a phone call from the principal informing them of the incident.

"They said a student got hurt, but it was no big problem," said Mitchell.

Dawna O'Brien has a son at Van Sickle and said she is saddened by the ordeal, but is not surprised it happened.

"It's scary.  My son is in the seventh grade, but this happens all the time," said O'Brien.

However, she said she still has good faith in administrators to handle these situations.

"They're the best. They can only do so much, but the teachers try and they have a great principal here," said O'Brien.

Disciplinary action has been taken towards the male student.

The Springfield Police Department said they don't believe the male student intentionally meant to hurt the female student.

They said as of right now it looks like it was "horseplay" that may have gotten out of hand, but they are looking into every aspect of the situation.
