One lane of Macon County Road 54 west of Notasulga before County Road 39 is currently closed due to part of the road being impassible, according to Macon County Department of Roads and Bridges Engineer J.D. Smith.
Information from the National Weather Service, provided in an LSR, or Local Storm Report, said the roadway caved in and was washed away because of a small creek that flooded its banks.
Smith said that was not accurate, adding that the Dept. of Roads and Bridges had been watching that particular stretch of roadway for several weeks and was planning to replace a section of pipe that had been undermined due to decay.
Smith said rain played a roll in the failure but was not the sole reason. Repairs will soon start, he added.
The NWS says approximately 2 inches of rain fell in the area overnight through Friday afternoon.
Commuters should seek an alternate route around this portion of roadway until it can be repaired.
