DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

The cloudy conditions and choppy waters made for some great fishing Saturday, so it was the right timing for the Hooked on Decatur Fishing Tournament.

It was the third annual Team Bass Finishing Competition which serves as a fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Project to assist injured veterans. North Alabama's best got out early to hit Ingles Harbor in Decatur.

While anglers competed on the water, more good continued on the dock. Lifesouth Community Blood Centers reeled in donors to step up and help. Donations supply nearly all of the blood used by hospitals in North Alabama. Organizers said collecting donations alongside Wounded Warriors was a perfect fit.

"A lot of veterans have had situations where they have been recipients of blood products, or they have had loved ones that have, so they realize the importance of blood donations, and keeping our hospitals supplied," said donor recruiter Cherry Hammonds. "So it's a natural fit for us to be out here with them."

The blood drive also honored Jimmy Copeland who died in a motorcycle accident in 2012. His passenger survived after receiving more than 200 pints of blood.
