LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – The champion of the Kentucky Derby Festival's 3rd annual Derby Burger Challenge was chosen by a panel of judges Monday.
Out of more than 100 submissions, Zoe Badillo's Pineapple Wasabi Burger took the title.
Badillo, a Sullivan University student, combined ground beef, pineapple juice, green onions, tomato paste, chives and mint then served it on top a whole wheat bun.
For winning Badillo received an $100 gift card to Kroger, a grilling package from Kentucky Beef Council, and VIP tickets to Thunder Over Louisville, Waterfront Jam and Beerfest at Kroger's Fest-a-Ville. Badillo's burger will be featured as the Local Legendary Burger at Hard Rock Café in May.
The burgers were judged on taste, appearance, creativity and ease of preparation.
Other burgers that stood out were Carolyn Harper's Harpo's Derby Breakfast Burger, which was named the runner-up in the contest, Dave Palazzo's Kentucky Blue & Beer Burger, which finished third, finished third and Pat Swartz's Cool Cow, which finished fourth.
