CHILTON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Twelve families are concerned for the safety of their dogs after they disappeared in Chilton County.

Benji Smith remembers the day he brought home a new addition to the family.

"My son just said hey he's going to look like a bulldozer when he get grown. So we just picked part of it," Smith said.

Dozer is the name they gave their new puppy pit bull. But two years later, the Smiths finds themselves dealing with a pet owner's worst nightmare.

"We thought he was just roaming around. But on the third night when he was not home to eat when I went to feed him, I thought, 'Naw he ain't coming back,'" Smith said.

It turns out the Smith family is the latest to file a missing dog report with the Chilton County Humane Society.

"We have received multiple complaints and calls about people's dogs missing which all been predominantly pit-bull," explained Jessica Terry, the shelter's director.

She says most of the missing dog cases are blue pit bulls like Dozer.

"About halfway through this month when we kept having people coming and looking for their dogs and them not being here, we had to say, "OK, something is going on,'" Terry said. "My gut tells me someone is taking them. When they're doing with them I'm not a 100 percent sure."

"This is not just a coincidence. Someone is either taking them away or something," Smith said.

At this point, this is all only speculation. Pet owners like Benji Smith just want some real answers or something even better.

"I want my dog back," he added.

Terry says 12 different families have called in, or filed a missing dog report over the last month. So far none of those dogs have been found.
