NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMB) - North Myrtle Beach High School student Dalton Socrates is currently battling leukemia. He is at MUSC as we speak receiving treatment. With the words "no Chief fights alone", the school came together to lip sing and dance to Pharrell Williams' hit song "Happy", and dedicate the performance to Socrates.
The video posted to YouTube yesterday has already been watched in other countries but the impact it has right at home is immeasurable.
"It's not just a video," says Lesley Etherson, the teacher who was in charge of producing the video. "It's... we're good at making videos. We like to make videos as a school, but it really is about sending a message this time. That you're not alone Dalton. "
Socrates, a sophomore at North Myrtle Beach High School, was diagnosed with Leukemia on January 9. He started feeling ill, and when he went to the hospital, the doctors delivered the news that his father calls "a perfect storm". Dalton was immediately moved to undergo chemotherapy at MUSC in Charleston.
The high school faculty knew immediately they needed to help some way. So they, and the student body, went Dalton Strong in the video you're watching now.
"It's just a great thing that we put such a thing together as a school to reach out to him and make him feel like 'you're not the only one fighting this'," says Billy Pippin, a friend of Dalton. "'We're here too, you can lean on us'. So it was, I mean it was... It made me happy."
Dalton's father says his sons' competitive spirit is good. And the family is touched by the love and support of the community, and the power of one video. "I was actually amazed to see all the people that didn't even know him, weren't even that close with him, how much they cared and supported," says Dalton's best friend Robert Burns. "Just cause they know, one of the chiefs is going through something like this and it's just real important that they show support and care."
Even For friends who miss him, and peers who haven't had yet a chance to meet him, the video is their way of letting him know- No chief fights alone.
