Department of Education to destroy past records for special needs children

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Alabama Department of Education is informing parents of special needs children certain records are scheduled for destruction.

The certain special records education records pertain to special education complaints that were filed between March 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009. These records also pertain to special education due process hearing requests filed between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2007.

If you are a parent of a child involved with a special education complaint, a special education mediation or due process hearing that occurred during the mentioned time frame, you may request those records pertaining to your child through mail or by faxing a signed written authorization. These can be sent to Ms. Camilla Gibson or Mr. Clark Waggoner, Alabama State Department of Education, Special Educations Services, P.O. Box 302101, Montgomery, AL 36130-2101. You may fax the letter to 334-242-9192.

If you plan on submitting a letter you should include the student's name, current mailing address and telephone number. Unless a signed written request for records is made, the records will be destroyed on May 1, 2014.
