Six-time NASCAR Spring Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson was supposed to make an appearance Thursday in Auburn, but has canceled the event due to an untimely death in the family.

Representatives of the Talladega Superspeedway say Johnson's brother-in-law died in a skydiving accident Sunday evening. Details surrounding the brother-in-law's death were not immediately available.

Johnson was scheduled to share his success story through a motivational speech with Auburn head football coach Gus Malzahn and the 2013 SEC Championship-winning Auburn Tigers.

"We are communicating with his race team and are hoping to figure out another date for an appearance that works best for everyone involved," said Russell Branham, Director of Public Relations for the Superspeedway.

Johnson was also planning to promote the Aaron's 499 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race set for May 4 at the Auburn event. The race will be held at the Superspeedway.
