MONTGOMERY, AL (WAFF) -

A trial over a controversial Alabama abortion law is set in federal court next month.

A new court filing shows Federal Judge Myron Thompson ordered a non-jury trial over Alabama's Women's Health and Safety Act to be held May 19 in Montgomery.

The law signed into effect by the Governor last year requires doctors who provide abortions to have admitting privileges at a local hospital.

Planned Parenthood Southeast sued over the law.

A similar law in Texas has already been upheld by both a federal judge and a federal appeals court.

A temporary restraining order that put the law on hold is April 2 at 5 p.m.

Both sides have filed a motion seeking to extend that restraining order until the court decides the issue at trial.

The judge has yet to rule on that motion.
