MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Officials have confirmed one fatality as the result of a crash on Old Railroad Bed Road, north of Highway 53.

The road was shut down between Herbert Clark Road and Turner Road for about two hours after first responders arrived. Witnesses at the scene reported gas leaking from the vehicle, but the leak was quickly contained.

State Troopers said the driver of a 1989 Ford Explorer was killed. They said the driver was headed southbound, drove off the road, overcorrected and crashed off a bridge on the northbound side.

Troopers identified the victim as 73-year-old Thomas Campbell of Harvest.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash. Troopers are continuing to investigate. Toney Fire & Rescue, HEMSI and the Madison County Sheriff's Department assisted at the scene.
