TUPELO, MS -

(WMC-TV) – Carol, the elephant wounded in a drive-by shooting in Tupelo, Miss., is back in North Mississippi Thursday almost exactly one year after she was shot.

She is ready to return to the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey circus stage Thursday night as her recovery comes full circle.

Carol, now 40 years old, was shot in 2013 outside BancorpSouth Arena in Tupelo.

A single bullet entered her right side; a few inches lower or a few inches closer to her head and Carol could have died.

Police suspect someone in a light-colored SUV fired the shots, but officers did not have much else to go on. The shooter has not been found despite a $34,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton said, "It was quite frankly an embarrassing moment for the city, but hopefully those days are behind us."

After Carol was shot, she was taken to Missouri where she was treated.

On Wednesday night, she was honored, among others, with a special cape for her courage.

Carol will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday in Tupelo at BancorpSouth Arena.
