BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Many people probably know Tuscaloosa best as the home of Alabama Football. But for 20 years, it was Alabama's capitol city, and this weekend, you can step back into that time in history.

The Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society is hosting a celebration called "A Capitol Idea" Thursday through Sunday. The four-day event includes actors portraying notable Tuscaloosans of the era, a tour of historic locations, stagecoach and wagon rides and more. Organizers say knowing your past is important to the future.

"Knowing who your family was, knowing what your community was, lets you appreciate how far we've come, and how far we can go," Mike Sullivan, an actor portraying the Old Tavern owner, said.

Katherine Richter, executive director of the Preservation Society and also an actor in this weekend's events, said this is an important time in Tuscaloosa's story.

"Tuscaloosa was the capitol from 1826 to 1846, and it's such a rich time period in Tuscaloosa's history. And we thought this is the perfect opportunity to celebrate these 20 years," said Richter.

Some events require tickets, and some are free. For the complete schedule and ticket information, visit historictuscaloosa.org.
