MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

An ill 6-year-old boy was surprised Wednesday with news that he will be going to Disney World! The announcement was part of a Magic Moments surprise held for Houston Sides, an Eclectic resident.

Sides learned of the trip around 6 p.m. at the Kicking Chicken restaurant in his hometown.

In July 2013, Houston was an active 5-year-old who loved playing baseball, but two days before his sixth birthday, his life changed forever. During a routine check-up, Houston's doctors discovered the athletic, seemingly healthy little boy had Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a rapidly progressing form of muscular dystrophy that occurs primarily in boys.

It is the most common fatal disorder diagnosed in childhood.

Over the past 9 months, Houston's "normal" childhood has been stolen from him by this life threatening disease.

In May, though, Houston will get a break from worrying about his illness while on the trip to Disney World.

"Like each child we serve, each magic moment is unique and personal to that child. Houston has endured so much over the past year and to be able to give him this specialized trip is exactly what we do for all of our Magic Moments children," said Joyce Spielberger, Executive Director of Magic Moments. "Because we are a not a national organization and only serve the children of Alabama, Magic Moments is able to get up close and personal with our recipients and families."

Ronnie Wright is the Magic Moments volunteer or " Magic Maker" who is putting the reveal together for Houston. "I am so honored to be able to put this surprise reveal together. I can't wait to see their reactions to what will be the definition of a MAGIC MOMENT! We give families joy when there is not much joy and laughter that will be around forever!" Ronnie said.

Magic Moments is a Birmingham-based 501(c)(3) organization providing non-medical wishes to critically ill children ages 4-18 living in Alabama. The organization has served more than 4,200 children by making their wish come true since 1984.
