HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville Police shot and killed a gunman after he opened fire on officers early Friday morning.

The incident began when officers were called to a house at 2014 Stanford Drive, off of Governors Drive, at 1:02 a.m. for a report of a fight.

When officers arrived on the scene, a man they later identified as William Arthur Stogner opened fire with a long gun. One officer, Jason Moore, was shot in the face. Two other officers returned fire.

Stogner barricaded himself inside the home and fired on officers from the door and windows with a rifle. Officers said Stogner's wife, a victim of domestic violence, fled the home before the shooting began and took shelter at a neighbor's home.

SWAT responded to the scene and officers returned fire until Stogner stopped shooting. Investigators said the gunman had at least one shotgun and a high-powered rifle with plenty of ammunition for both.

Moore was taken to Huntsville Hospital where he is being treated for moderate non-life threatening injuries from a shotgun blast.

Stogner died at the scene of multiple gunshot wounds.

Police evacuated nearby homes on Stanford Drive. Evacuees were taken to First Baptist Church on Governors Drive, but have since been allowed back in their homes.

Governors Drive was blocked from Memorial Parkway to Huntsville Hospital but has reopened.

The case is still under investigation.
