LAWRENCE, KS (KCTV/AP) -

Lawrence police say they've arrested a man accused of robbing a credit union and making his getaway to Nebraska in a waiting taxi.

The suspect has been identified as 35-year-old Antonio P. Gaitan, of Kansas City, KS.

Lawrence police responded about 11:15 a.m. Saturday to the report of a robbery at Truity Credit Union, 3400 West Sixth St.

Bank employees said the suspect, who took a taxi to the bank, entered the bank and demanded cash from one of the tellers.

The employee complied, and the suspect left the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash. Police say the robber didn't show a weapon, and no injuries were reported.

Police say surveillance video shows the suspect left the bank parking lot in a taxi that had been waiting. Investigators later located the taxi driver and determined the driver wasn't involved in the robbery.

Investigators learned the suspect paid the taxi driver a significant amount of money to drive to Omaha, NE, where the suspect was dropped off at a bus station.

Lawrence detectives coordinated with members of the Omaha Police Department, who were able to locate the suspect at the bus station Saturday evening.

The suspect made an attempt to flee, however Omaha police were able to take him into custody.

At the time of his arrest, Gaitan had an outstanding warrant through the United States Marshals Service for a parole violation, stemming from a previous conviction for bank robbery.

Lawrence detectives interviewed Gaitan in Omaha and linked him to the credit union robbery in Lawrence, as well as a bank robbery days earlier in the Kansas City area.

Gaitan is currently being held without bond on the federal warrant as detectives prepare affidavits on the Lawrence robbery charge.
