ALEXANDER CITY, AL (WSFA) -

Alexander City officials say that Monday night's rain did not worsen the three roads that were damaged during the April 8 storm.

The city engineer says that there has been no further deterioration to Trussell Road. The city will find out Friday whether or not the state will declare an "emergency." If no decision is made by Friday, city officials say they will begin making repairs to the three damaged roads.

A part of Trussell Road collapsed from the volume of water rushing through Coley Creek on April 8. The gaping hole measures about 30 feet deep and at least 40 feet across with a huge tree in the middle of it.

"I am stunned," said Gerard Brewer, the city engineer for Alex City and Public Works Director. "I've never seen anything like this in my 17 years with the department."

Brewer estimates that Alex City received about five inches of rain in just a few hours. You can see a big piece of asphalt downstream about 20 yards away from Trussell Road.

Three miles away, Randy Spivey was checking out the six-foot hole on Old Kellyton Road.

"I sure hope they fix it soon because I don't want anyone to get hurt," said Spivey who walks Old Kellyton Road everyday for exercise.

Back on Trussell Road Brewer shudders at the thought of what could've happened, an unsuspecting driver coming along and plunging to the bottom.

"This is just another example of how power these currents are and you never know what's going on underneath the roads," Brewer said.

Coley Creek Road sustained damage as well.

For now no repair work is being done on all three roads, and there's a reason for that.

"We're waiting to see if the Governor plans to declare areas like this an emergency because that would open the way for FEMA money," Brewer said. "We hope to hear by Friday of this week."

Brewer says it will take around $500,000 and two months to fix the roads. What he can't say is when those repairs will begin.

Here is a list of current road closures:

  • Trussell Road- indefinite closure. Residents need to take Highway 22
  • Barrett Road
  • Coley Creek Road
  • Midway Estates Road, connecting to County Road 40
  • Ridgeway at Old Kellyton Road
