First responders honored for saving deputy's life

Deputy Robert Furgal Deputy Robert Furgal
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

A Richland County sheriff's deputy was responding to a burglary last November when he lost control of his car and hit a tree.

That left deputy Robert Furgal trapped in his burning car.

After spending months recovering, he is back on the job.

On Wednesday deputy Furgal stood alongside Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott who recognized first responders instrumental in that rescue.

Lott presented two deputies and two EMT's a life saving award.

He says deputy Furgal is alive today because of those first responders' bravery.

"They didn't hesitate in putting their lives in danger using the skills and training equipment to make sure Bob was removed from that vehicle that he didn't suffer any more damage than what he already had to his body," said Lott. "They saved his life."

Sheriff Lott also recognized the department's gang unity for its work on the streets.
