Lanett murder suspect caught by Chambers Co. authorities after manhunt

TROUP COUNTY, GA (WTVM) -

Multiple law enforcement agencies were actively searching the Troup County area for a man wanted in connection to a murder in Lanett, Ala.

A murder warrant for Thomas Brent Starkey, 23, was issued on April 9. He was wanted in connection to the shooting death of Christopher Griggs. Starkey was later apprehended by Chambers County authorities and booked in the Chambers County Jail.

On April 10, investigators with the Narcotics Division of the Troup County Sheriff's Office received information from Lanett Police Department that Starkey was possibly in a gold Lexus in the LaGrange area.

At about 8:54 a.m. the suspect's vehicle was spotted with four unknown individuals inside the car and a traffic stop was attempted at Hamilton Road near Davis Road.

The vehicle did not comply when emergency lights were activated and the vehicle continued south on Whitesville Road turning south on Interstate 85 as units pursued the vehicle at a high rate of speed. The car pulled off the Interstate just north of exit 6 and all four persons in the car fled on foot. 

Deputies and investigators began pursuing the still unknown suspects on foot in the woods at which time mutual aid from other agencies was requested including K-9 and helicopter assistance.

At about 10:30 a.m. a female suspect, identified as Vanassa Yoon of LaGrange, was apprehended with the aid of a K-9. A male suspect, identified as, James Forrest McMillan, was taken into custody shortly after 12 p.m.

After speaking with the male subject on scene it was determined that Starkey was not in the vehicle. All officers and agencies cleared the scene at about 1:55 p.m.

Both Yoon and McMillan face charges of possession of Methamphetamine with intent to distribute. Alan Wood, a third passenger, was later apprehended and will face those same charges. Wood also has an outstanding violation of probabation superior warrant for his arrest. 

The driver has yet to be idenfitied or apprehended. He or she will be charged with fleeing and attempting to elude along with the drug charges and possible additional traffic charges. 

Multiple local and state law enforcement agencies from Georgia and Alabama including the US Marshall Service assisted in this search.
